Released this fall Sarah Klassen's powerful family saga, The Wittenbergs, compelled Elin Thordarson to pen this thoughtful review. While struck by Klassen's lyrical writing she also found the whispered literary references to be irresistable. Here is a small sample of the review.
Klassen, a widely-published poet and short fiction writer, has crafted a multi-generational family saga set in Winnipeg right before the Gulf War and the fall of the Soviet Union, that also deftly dips into family memories of Ukraine during the Russian Revolution.… Her writing is powerful, incredibly lyrical, and the characters hard to shake, even after the The Wittenbergs is said and done and put back on the shelf. Coming off its recent win at the High Plains Book Awards, Dora Dueck's collection of short fiction What You Get at Home continues to garner high praise. The Mennonite World Review finds Dora's writing, "lingers long in the reader’s mind." Here is a little more from the review.
This collection of short fiction by Canadian Mennonite writer Dora Dueck won the 2013 High Plains Book Award in the short story category. The award recognizes literary works reflecting life on the High Plains in the United States and Canada. Dueck’s book is well worth this recognition. Read the full review here.
