Elias Mandel was a Canadian poet and literary critic. He was born in Saskatchewan and grew up in the Canadian prairies during the Great Depression. Mandel served in Canada's Medical Corps during World War II. Mandel won the 1968 Governor General's Award, and in 1982 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. In 1989 he was made an honorary Doctor of Letters by York University.
