The Red-Headed Woman with the Black Black Heart tells how our heroine comes to a northern Manitoba mining town during the 1934 labour dispute--like a gunfighter to the lawless west--and changes the town forever. Though rumoured to be only 19 years old, the heroine leads the town's women in foiling efforts to break the strike. On the day known as "Bloody Saturday" the women blockade the staircase to the Community Hall and tear the shirts from the backs of strikebreakers, all the while singing their own rowdy pro-labour versions of popular songs.
The Red-Headed Woman with the Black Black Heart is a comic novel growing out of the legends, myths, and culture of Manitoba's northern mining district.
